After J.W. left the building, Saxon moved to the window to watch him walk across the parking lot to his car in the midday heat. Bell stood near his boss, peering over his shoulder to see what was drawing his attention. “He’s driving a rust bucket, ain’t he?” he said.

“General Foods of Chicago, huh?” Saxon said. “Shit. I wish he was what he says he is. Maybe we could sell some damn pork to some people. Somebody needs to buy some of this meat.”

“I don’t believe he’s ever bought more than a plateful of barbecue at one time. He didn’t know what to ask me when I showed him the line,” Bell offered. “He just grinned and nodded while I was talking the whole time.”

“He knows way yonder too much about some things, though,” Saxon said, turning toward the telephone on the comer of the worktable. “Why’s a damn buyer asking me about my personal life? You know, I believe Mr. Johnston, or whatever his name is, is driving an unsafe vehicle. A car like that heap of junk is just an accident waiting to happen.”

“You don’t believe he’s union, do you, Mister Saxon? Trying to organize them girls on the line?”

“I don’t know what he is,” Franklin said. “But I know I don’t want him around asking questions and talking to my people.”

“Wonder if he drives safe?”

“I can tell, Jenkins,” Franklin Saxon said, punching a set of numbers into the telephone, “by just looking at him, that that fellow is not safety-minded.”
